    Building aggregate timber supply models from individual harvest choice

    Timber supply has traditionally been modelled using aggregate data. In this paper, we build aggregate supply models for four roundwood products for the US state of North Carolina from a stand-level harvest choice model applied to detailed forest inventory. The simulated elasticities of pulpwood supply are much lower than reported by previous studies. Cross price elasticities indicate a dominant influence of sawtimber markets on pulpwood supply.     Long Term Culture of Hepatocytes of Some Fish Species of the Chesapeake Bay

    The liver is an important site of metabolism and effects of toxic chemicals. This makes it an important organ for tumorigenesis studies. This study was aimed at investigating the optimal culture characteristics of liver cells derived from some indigenous Chesapeake Bay fish species. Hepatocytes from Atlantic -menhaden (Brevootia tyraMus), toadfish (Opsanus tau), croaker (Micropogonius undulatus), and hogchocker (Trinectes maculatus) were isolated using an enzymatic dispersion technique. The highest yield was obtained from toadfish livers (14.9±5. lx 1 o5 cells/g oflive weight) and the lowest was from the croaker (5.9±3. lx 1 o5 cells/g of live body weight). The percentage of hepatocytes in cell preparations exceeded 90% except for the toadfish liver cells preparation (82.3%). Freshly isolated hepatocytes were globular with irregular contour and occurred as individual cells or small clusters of 2-30 cells. A confluent monolayer of attached cells was obtained after two weeks of incubation. An osmolality of 325 m Osm/kg best supported the multiplication of hepatocytes of the four fish species. While the optimum temperature for hogchocker and toadfish hepatocytes appeared to be 33oC; it ranged from 21-27oC for menhaden and croaker.     Behavioural effects of pheromone-based control system, ExosexTM SPTab, on male Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella

    We report on laboratory studies to examine behavioural effects of a new pheromone-based control system for stored product moths, Exosex™ SPTab auto-confusion, on virgin male Plodia interpunctella. The SPTab comprises a compressed electrostatic powder tablet, containing the female sex pheromone (Z,E)-9,12-Tetradecadienyl acetate; designed to be an attractive source to males and disrupt the mate finding ability of several stored moth pest species. Our aims were to examine the effects of SPTab contact on male ability to locate females and to be attractive sources to other males. Observations of behavioural effects were made in a moth flight tunnel. Virgin male P. interpunctella were treated on SPTabs weathered from 1-8 weeks. After treatment, males were either immediately released downwind of calling females in the upwind section of the flight tunnel, or caged individually for 1 to 48 h before release. The ability of treated males to act as false lures for other males was measured by treating males on different age SPTabs as before, caging them and then placing them upwind of untreated males. In all studies males were scored on making source contact. Males treated on the SPTab and immediately released downwind of calling females showed a 96.7% reduction in their ability to contact the females. Males held for 48 h before release still showed a significant reduction in source contact compared to untreated controls. Treated males tested after 3 h, were as attractive as calling females with >75% of flights resulting in source contact. Significant reduction in female source contact was still evident when males were treated on SPTab weathered for 4 weeks. Males treated on SPTabs weathered for up to 8 weeks were significantly attractive to untreated males, and equal to calling females. The results indicate that contact with SPTab significantly reduces the ability of male P. interpunctella to locate females for up to two days. These males could increase the confusion effect by becoming competitive attractive point sources for other males. The Exosex SPTab has novel methods of causing mating disruption.     The Gibbs paradox, Black hole entropy and the thermodynamics of isolated horizons

    This letter presents a new, solely thermodynamical argument for considering the states of the quantum isolated horizon of a black hole as distinguishable. We claim that only if the states are distinguishable, the thermodynamic entropy is an extensive quantity and can be well-defined. To show this, we make a comparison with a classical ideal gas system whose statistical description makes only sense if an additional 1/N!-factor is included in the state counting in order to cure the Gibbs paradox.     Assessing the accuracy of quantitative molecular microbial profiling

Available from MDPI via the DOI in this record.The application of high-throughput sequencing in profiling microbial communities is providing an unprecedented ability to investigate microbiomes. Such studies typically apply one of two methods: amplicon sequencing using PCR to target a conserved orthologous sequence (typically the 16S ribosomal RNA gene) or whole (meta)genome sequencing (WGS). Both methods have been used to catalog the microbial taxa present in a sample and quantify their respective abundances. However, a comparison of the inherent precision or bias of the different sequencing approaches has not been performed. We previously developed a metagenomic control material (MCM) to investigate error when performing different sequencing strategies. Amplicon sequencing using four different primer strategies and two 16S rRNA regions was examined (Roche 454 Junior) and compared to WGS (Illumina HiSeq). All sequencing methods generally performed comparably and in good agreement with organism specific digital PCR (dPCR); WGS notably demonstrated very high precision. Where discrepancies between relative abundances occurred they tended to differ by less than twofold. Our findings suggest that when alternative sequencing approaches are used for microbial molecular profiling they can perform with good reproducibility, but care should be taken when comparing small differences between distinct methods. This work provides a foundation for future work comparing relative differences between samples and the impact of extraction methods.     Labels for non-individuals

    Quasi-set theory is a first order theory without identity, which allows us to cope with non-individuals in a sense. A weaker equivalence relation called ``indistinguishability'' is an extension of identity in the sense that if xx is identical to yy then xx and yy are indistinguishable, although the reciprocal is not always valid. The interesting point is that quasi-set theory provides us a useful mathematical background for dealing with collections of indistinguishable elementary quantum particles. In the present paper, however, we show that even in quasi-set theory it is possible to label objects that are considered as non-individuals. We intend to prove that individuality has nothing to do with any labelling process at all, as suggested by some authors.     Transport behavior of holes in boron delta-doped diamond structures

    Boron delta-doped diamond structures have been synthesized using microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition and fabricated into FET and gated Hall bar devices for assessment of the electrical characteristics. A detailed study of variable temperature Hall, conductivity, and field-effect mobility measurements was completed. This was supported by Schr€dinger-Poisson and relaxation time o calculations based upon application of Fermi’s golden rule. A two carrier-type model was developed with an activation energy of 0.2eVbetweenthedeltalayerlowestsubbandwithmobility0.2 eV between the delta layer lowest subband with mobility 1 cm2/Vs and the bulk valence band with high mobility. This new understanding of the transport of holes in such boron delta-doped structures has shown that although Hall mobility as high as 900 cm2/Vs was measured at room temperature, this dramatically overstates the actual useful performance of the device

    Space as a low-temperature regime of graphs

    I define a statistical model of graphs in which 2-dimensional spaces arise at low temperature. The configurations are given by graphs with a fixed number of edges and the Hamiltonian is a simple, local function of the graphs. Simulations show that there is a transition between a low-temperature regime in which the graphs form triangulations of 2-dimensional surfaces and a high-temperature regime, where the surfaces disappear. I use data for the specific heat and other observables to discuss whether this is a phase transition.     Discordant bioinformatic predictions of antimicrobial resistance from whole-genome sequencing data of bacterial isolates: an inter-laboratory study.

    Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a threat to public health. Clinical microbiology laboratories typically rely on culturing bacteria for antimicrobial-susceptibility testing (AST). As the implementation costs and technical barriers fall, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) has emerged as a 'one-stop' test for epidemiological and predictive AST results. Few published comparisons exist for the myriad analytical pipelines used for predicting AMR. To address this, we performed an inter-laboratory study providing sets of participating researchers with identical short-read WGS data from clinical isolates, allowing us to assess the reproducibility of the bioinformatic prediction of AMR between participants, and identify problem cases and factors that lead to discordant results. We produced ten WGS datasets of varying quality from cultured carbapenem-resistant organisms obtained from clinical samples sequenced on either an Illumina NextSeq or HiSeq instrument. Nine participating teams ('participants') were provided these sequence data without any other contextual information. Each participant used their choice of pipeline to determine the species, the presence of resistance-associated genes, and to predict susceptibility or resistance to amikacin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime. We found participants predicted different numbers of AMR-associated genes and different gene variants from the same clinical samples. The quality of the sequence data, choice of bioinformatic pipeline and interpretation of the results all contributed to discordance between participants. Although much of the inaccurate gene variant annotation did not affect genotypic resistance predictions, we observed low specificity when compared to phenotypic AST results, but this improved in samples with higher read depths. Had the results been used to predict AST and guide treatment, a different antibiotic would have been recommended for each isolate by at least one participant. These challenges, at the final analytical stage of using WGS to predict AMR, suggest the need for refinements when using this technology in clinical settings. Comprehensive public resistance sequence databases, full recommendations on sequence data quality and standardization in the comparisons between genotype and resistance phenotypes will all play a fundamental role in the successful implementation of AST prediction using WGS in clinical microbiology laboratories
